Jesus’ eighth parable focused on being watchful and expectant, both for the coming of our Master and that of the enemy. In this account of the ‘Watchful Servant’, Jesus asks us to be ready for service through adequate preparation and readiness to act, knowing that our master or boss would soon return. He promises huge rewards for those found ready, and much more for those who had to wait indefinitely for their master’s return.
Watchfulness includes adequate preparation, patience, and readiness to act when the time comes!
In the same line of thinking, Jesus charges us to be watchful for our adversary. When we stay vigilant, we will not be taken unawares when the devil comes with his trickery; this could mean difficulties with wayward children, loss of employment, failing health or marriage, childlessness, or poor finances.
Watchfulness could therefore be for good or bad tidings; for blessings or for trials. Stay Alert!
In spiritual matters, Jesus asks us to be watchful for His second coming, warning that He will come back when we least expect Him. Are you keeping yourself away from sin and the ways of the world? Are you actively staying on the path prescribed by God for His children; loving Him and loving your neighbor? Or do you think He will give us forewarnings to conform to His dictates before He comes?
Jesus has already forewarned us to always be vigilant and expectant of His arrival. If we stay watchful, we will be protected from the devil’s attacks, and be rewarded eternally by our God!

Lesson of the Week

1. Pray for patience to wait for as long as it takes for God’s time in your situation (Isaiah 40:31).
2. Ask God to show you how to be equipped and ready for action (Romans 13:11-14).
Have we had adequate preparation for the blessing or trial that is to come?
Do we have a plan in place for when that promotion or recognition comes, or are we waiting for the good fortune before we decide on our next course of action? Faith without works is dead (James 2:26); having a plan in place tells God we believe wholeheartedly that His blessings are on the way.
On the flip side of things, are we staying in God’s good books through obedience, in readiness for the trials and hardships of life? These will also come our way, you know! Remember that the devil comes to kill, steal, and destroy (John 10:10), and that he is roaring outside like a lion, looking to come in and destroy (1 Pet 5:8)?
Are we prepared and alert for the next level of activities; are we watchful for the commencement of the next phase of our lives?
For good or for bad, we have to be ready. Let us put on the complete armor of God (Ephesians 6:11-18); they protect us from every attack of the devil, and enable us win our victory for the Glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Stay prepared and watchful this week, and stand ready for action. Victory is assured!
Peace and Grace from the Lord Jesus.

Weekly Nugget: “And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through. Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not” (Luke 12:39-40; KJV).
